Artist Research: Bob Egan

I found an article in a newspaper about this artist who found the locations of album covers and I felt that this could really link in well with my Graphics project , so I researched more into it. Most of his findings have been around New York, he has found the locations of many classics such as The Ramones, The Doors, Kiss, Van Morrison, West Side Story, Bob Dylan, Cyndi Lauper and many more.  Unfortunately I didn't keep the actual article, but it still inspired me to look at his work in depth.
This has given me several ideas for my project because although the Brand New Eyes album cover does not have a location on it, (nor would I have the funds to search for it anyway) I could try and find some places where the song might make you think of, for example in Brick by Boring Brick there is a line that goes "So go get your shovel and we'll dig a big hole to bury the castle" which creates an unusual image, which could be created through the power of photoshop or something.
This is his actual website where he documents his findings: http://popspotsnyc.com/

Artist Research: Michel Tcherevkoff

Michel Tcherevkoff, born in Paris, was studying law until he found his true passion in photography. I love the way he uses natural objects and elements to create his masterpieces. I also like the way he uses light and darkness to enhance the colours of his objects. The way he composes his still life for example the way he places the flowers and their petals to create images of butterflies.

Digital Screen Printing

Here is my version of a digital screen print. It is an image of Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's and a picture of a tabby cat which links in with the film as she has a cat called cat.  I uploaded these onto photo shop and filtered and made it a greyscale, I followed a tutorial and this was my result to it. I think that it did turn out well and it does give a great effect, it was quite tricky to master and I might need to keep practising at it. This may be a route that I go down to create my album cover.

This is my second attempt, it depicts The Doors but Jim Morrison has a lizard face as he was known as the Lizard King.i like the effect that this has and I have used the closest colours to LA Woman.

Stitching Method

My inspiration for this experiment was the Pulp Hits album cover...
I decided to create my own version with McFly, I got a picture of them from google, a full bodied one is better and the way they are standing makes it really different. I went onto photoshop and went around them using the pen tool I then placed the background behind it and added a defined line around the shape.
I then used the text tool to write McFly and then used a splodge tool to go around and deleted the text to leave the splodge.
I think that this went quite well and is a possible technique that I could use for my final piece, I would like to try this again but make it look a bit more like stitching or textile like.

Stencilling

This was the inspiration for my stencil, it is a photo of Christina Perri.

I copied this picture from google onto photoshop. I then followed the tutorial on the Graphics Lesson Blog to create a stencil, it took several attempts to get the technique right, I had to adjust the threshold to make it into a monochrome image. I then printed this out onto card to create a paper stencil too.
I carried on with the photoshop to create this stencil where I coloured in the rest of the image, I chose purple as it stands out and the music is targeted to a mainly female audience so it can be related to that. The video also recommended to choose a skin colour, it then changed this into little dots, I think that this can enhance the look to give it a kind of comic book style effect, which is quite nice, but I don't really think that ti fits in with the type of music.

I then changed the background to this circle effect. I think that it kind of gives this pop art look to it, which is quite nice and relates into the skin effect that I mentioned in the previous bit. I quite like this effect as it makes it more unique.

I then started to use the paper stencil, I cut the black parts out from the card and then used watercolour paint to make the stencil art.
I liked the effect that this created so I decided to make more of these using the same stencil but changing direction and use different colours. I then put stuck them together to create this kind of Andy Warhol piece. I  think that this really stands out due to the colour and the fact that they are not similar in the sense of the direction.
I really liked using this technique and it can give out different results due to the way that you want to create, either on photoshop/computerised or by hand and cutting the paper, I enjoyed doing both although the paper kind was much easier but possibly more time consuming so I don't really have a preference. I could possibly do this for the project and experiment with this more using different artists and musicians.

Photoshop Typography Portrait

This was my inspiration for this experiment.

I tried to make my own version by lightly placing the lyrics for Moon River over an image of Audrey Hepburn. I liked this but I wanted to carry on creating more different ones...
With this one I cropped the image, changed the tones and added more lyrics and a centred coloured one. I felt that my first attempt was better as it was more simplistic and just looked better.

I found this image of McFly on the Internet so I copied it onto Photo shop and copied out the lyrics from 'The Heart Never Lies'. I changed the tone so that it still had some colour in it, I then stamped the lyrics on it, and went on blending options to make the text into a rainbow effect. I felt that this went well and it really stands out, I would've liked to of done the complete process but at the time I found it too tricky to do.

I found this image of Avril Lavigne online too, I completed the whole process, by copying out the lyrics to 'Innocence' and then putting them in the background and making her features stand out by using the lyrics and making them a rainbow colour. I really liked the outcome and I would like to try and do more of these and possibly sue this for my project.
